Malham Tarn, 17th July

17 members and guests travelled by coach and two members and two guests by car. Despite a rather damp and squally start the trip was divided (by our lunch break) into two walks, led by Alister Clunie the National Trust Warden. We irst crossed the neutral bog to reach the acid raised bog beyond, enabling us to see the contrasts in the vegetation: then we walked through the woods to the Field Centre and back along the shore of the Tarn.

Species seen:
Birds: Meadow Pipit, Redpoll, Spotted Flycatcher, Swallow, House Martin, Linnet, Garden Warbler, Wood Pigeon, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, Little Grebe, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Moorhen, Great Crested Grebe, Redstart, Pied Wagtail, Blackbird, Carrion Crow.

Plants seen, among others, were: Dog’s Mercury, Water Avens, Marsh Cinquefoil, Marsh Hawksbeard, Meadowsweet, Northern and Southern Marsh Orchids with their hybrids, Saw-Wort, Beautiful St. John’s Wort, Devil’s Bit Scabious, Bloody Cranesbill, Rockrose, Greater Valerian, Marsh Forget-me-not, Marsh Bedstraw, Marsh Lousewort, Ragged Robin, Melancholy Thistle, Round-leaved Sundew and Common Wintergreen (very uncommon these days!)
